Interface Culture by Steven Johnson discusses Avatars

I had a great time at the 2008 AACE conference in Las Vegas, Nevada and I learned a great deal. Saint Leo University has a wonderful virtual campus that introduces a lot of their programs and benefits in video sessions on second life. I discussed this virtual campus in my brief paper presentation at the AACE conference and it serves as a great example of what universities can do with a virtual island in second life. This was a great opportunity for me to explore yet another great island that is interactive. I think they did a great job!

This Island provides in-world residents with an on-line virtual experience where users’ avatars have the ability to participate in a range of job-scenario activities.

This company located in California, is an innovative agency that creates captivating online experiences designed to successfully reach customers in a targeted, cost-effective, and measurable way. Clear Ink has usually helped real life companies such as Bell Sports, Philips and Autodesk. Currently it uses Second Life and its capabilities to assist other companies in building their land, which in turn increases their business flow.

I introduces the Second Life Planetarium on Spaceport Alpha because of the show. Upon entering the Planetarium, a show begins describing the effects of global warming on Animals. Education Island provides access to training simulations, training tools, virtual environments for training and role-playing, e-learning in SL, and corporate training. I stumbled across this location and thought it was a pretty interesting place for trainers/educators to at least get a glimpse of the future of learning.

This is Virtual Starry Night, the Second Life Van Gogh exhibit. It's a virtual art musuem of a lot of Van Gogh's work that is displayed in different locations throughout the world. The feature of this landmark is you can visit many libraries such as McMaster University Libraries, St. Society Hill Library, The Public Library of Charlotte & Meeklenburg County to name a few. Tsunami Demonstration on NOAA

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a sim in Second Life called Meteroa. On this island sim you can find fully interactive educational demonstrations about the ocean and weather. Examples include a sea life submarine ride, and a melting glacier demonstration. Another popular one is the tsnuami demonstration. Here you get to learn about the dangers of tsunamis and the research behind how they are detected. Of course, you also get to experience a real tsunami.
